Find quick answers to our most common questions below.

Steel vent covers are lightweight, durable, and available in the widest range of powder coat finishes — a versatile choice for floor, wall, and ceiling applications. Cast iron covers are the heaviest and most durable option with a traditional, ornate look and are essentially indestructible, making them popular for Victorian, Craftsman, and farmhouse-style homes. Brass covers offer a warm, classic aesthetic with excellent corrosion resistance and develop a natural patina over time. Cast aluminum is lightweight yet strong, well suited for ceiling and wall applications and commercial settings.

Matte black and satin nickel are the most popular finishes for modern and contemporary interiors. Matte black pairs well with dark hardware and minimalist design. Satin nickel complements stainless appliances and cooler neutral palettes. Oil-rubbed bronze is a strong choice for transitional spaces. Our Madelyn Carter line is designed so that finish options coordinate across both vent covers and cabinet hardware.

Our steel and cast iron vent covers are finished with a durable powder coat that provides strong rust resistance in normal indoor conditions. Brass and cast aluminum are naturally corrosion resistant and will not rust. For areas with high humidity — such as bathrooms or laundry rooms — cast aluminum or brass covers are the better long-term choice. Avoid abrasive cleaners that can wear down the protective coating.

Yes — our steel, brass, and cast iron floor registers are designed and manufactured to support regular foot traffic. Cast iron registers are particularly robust and are commonly used in high-traffic areas. Check the individual product listing to confirm it is rated for floor installation.

Metal vent covers can be painted with a spray paint or brush-on paint formulated for metal surfaces. Lightly sand the existing powder coat, apply a metal primer, then your top coat. Spray paint in a satin or matte finish tends to produce the most even result. Check to ensure painting will not impact your warranty.

Most of our metal registers include a damper — a set of moveable louvers behind the grille face that you can open or close to control airflow. Some styles have the damper pre-attached; others use a separate damper that mounts inside the duct. Fixed grilles (returns) do not include a damper by design. Check the individual product description to confirm.

A register is a supply vent that includes a damper, allowing you to control airflow into a room. A grille is a fixed vent with no moveable parts — it is used for air returns, where the goal is to draw room air back to the HVAC system. If you want to open and close the vent, you need a register. If the vent is connected to your return air system, a grille or return is the correct choice.
