A gravity register is a type of floor register designed for older homes with gravity-fed heating systems — typically homes built before 1950. In a gravity system, warm air from a central furnace rises naturally through large floor ducts and into rooms without a blower. Gravity registers are sized to fit these larger duct openings and often have heavier, more ornate grille faces. If your home has very large floor duct openings (often 12" x 24" or larger), you may have a gravity system.

For baseboard registers and returns, measure the overall length of the baseboard section you need — not the duct opening. Standard lengths are 15", 18", and 24". If you need to cover a longer section, full baseboard covers are available from 4 to 6 feet. Typical baseboard register height is approximately 5" and wall projection is approximately 3", though this varies by style. Custom lengths are available if your measurement falls between standard sizes.

No — baseboard registers are covers for forced-air ductwork that runs along the baseboard, not replacements for electric baseboard heating units. If you have electric baseboard heaters with heating elements inside, those require baseboard heater covers, which are a different product. If you are unsure which product you need, contact us and we can help identify the right solution.

Individual baseboard registers are available in standard lengths of 15", 18", and 24". Full baseboard heater covers are available in lengths from 4 to 6 feet. Custom lengths are available for both product types.

Baseboard registers from our catalog are designed for forced-air HVAC systems, where air flows through ductwork and exits through the register. They are not designed for hydronic (hot water) baseboard systems, which use a pipe running through a fin-tube heating element. If you have a hot water baseboard system, you need a baseboard heater cover, not a register.

Gravity registers are used in homes with older gravity-fed heating systems, and their duct openings are typically much larger than modern forced-air vents. Common gravity register duct sizes include 12" x 24", 14" x 24", and 16" x 25", though sizes vary significantly by home. If your opening is unusually large or does not match a standard size, we can make a custom gravity register to fit.

The most effective approach is to replace aging or damaged metal baseboard heater covers with new ones. Our baseboard heater covers are available in clean, contemporary profiles that modernize the look of any room without replacing the heating element itself. Painting the covers to match the wall color also helps them recede visually. For a more dramatic upgrade, some homeowners box in baseboard heaters with custom millwork — contact us if you need covers that fit within a built-in design.
